The Show Did Go On
submitted by Julie Stamm
Due to the storm this week our February 20th Membership Meeting to be held at Westminster Canterbury was cancelled. However, our scheduled speaker, Sara Fern Fitzsimmons, was able to get there and gave a fascinating presentation about the American Chestnut Foundation and the work it is doing to restore the classic tree to our woodlands. Sara described the foundation’s approach using multiple pathways in science and technology. Scientists are mapping genes that control blight resistance to select the most resistant trees, introducing naturally occurring viruses to weaken the blight fungus and researching other diseases and pests that impede the tree’s successful reintroduction in to the wild. I urge everyone to visit the website at www.acf.org. Over 25 Westminster Canterbury residents attended including 3 AGC members, Shelah Scott, Ruth Wadlington and myself.

There are still some dates on the calendar to go visit this beautiful farm and purchase some of the best hellebores in the world. Visit http://www.pineknotfarms.com for more information.
